From Humble Beginnings to Leadership
Dr. Eyad's journey began in Al Khobar, where he grew up in a family deeply committed to values. His father worked in the oil industry, and from a young age, Dr. Eyad was instilled with a sense of responsibility. At just ten years old, he began managing the household’s finances, showing early signs of leadership. During his childhood, he had to step up and manage the family’s needs in his father’s absence, a responsibility that molded him into the leader he is today.
Dr. Eyad shared that these early experiences, particularly managing the family budget and handling day-to-day tasks, gave him a strong sense of discipline, independence, and accountability, which he carries with him in his professional life.
A Path of Change: From Engineering to the Digital World
His journey took a pivotal turn when he studied at the prestigious King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals. Dr. Eyad's early interest in engineering and technology led him to pursue a degree in computer science, with a deep passion for programming and innovation. He worked on several engineering projects and even designed solutions that have had a lasting impact in industries like oil and gas.
While still at university, Dr. Eyad was presented with a unique opportunity, an internship at Aramco, one of the largest and most respected oil companies in the world. There, he began to see technology through a new lens, as a tool for transformation that could make a significant impact on business processes. This exposure to cutting-edge technologies laid the foundation for his later work in digital transformation and engineering solutions.
A Breakthrough in Digital Transformation at Aramco
One of Dr. Eyad's most defining moments came when he helped pioneer real-time integrated decision-making systems at Aramco. His role was to design a system that could provide real-time data for decision-makers in the company, enhancing efficiency and reducing the time spent on decision-making processes. This project, which spanned multiple years, not only revolutionized Aramco's internal processes but also laid the groundwork for future innovations in industrial systems and digital communication.
In 2013, Dr. Eyad led the refinery of the future project for Jizan Refinery, utilizing technology and innovation to design systems that would shape the future of oil refineries. This project demonstrated his ability to think outside the box and bring visionary ideas to life, creating models of efficiency and sustainability in the oil industry.
Innovation and Leadership Beyond Aramco
Dr. Eyad's career trajectory continued to soar as he moved into consulting and executive roles. After 19 years at Aramco, he made the bold decision to transition into a leadership position at IBM. There, he contributed to industrial digitalization and helped Saudi Arabia's energy sector transition into a more integrated, efficient, and modern business environment.
Dr. Eyad was instrumental in establishing IBM's energy sector in Saudi Arabia, where he focused on aligning the company's technology with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 goals. By transforming data management systems and optimizing workflows, he was able to help organizations reduce operational costs and improve productivity. He emphasized that technology is no longer just about digital tools—it's about creating smarter systems that foster greater collaboration and increase efficiency across industries.
Navigating Challenges and Making Decisions
One of the key lessons Dr. Eyad shared was about taking ownership of decisions and embracing challenges. He recalled the pivotal moment when he transitioned from being a customer of technology solutions to leading a team at IBM to create new products. He encouraged the younger generation to be bold in decision-making and not be afraid to ask for forgiveness if things don’t go as planned. He also spoke about how sometimes the toughest decisions are the ones that lead to the greatest breakthroughs, and that it’s essential to have confidence in your vision even when others doubt it.
