Khalid Baghdadi: A Journey of Leadership, Innovation, and Self-Discovery

In today’s Leaders Mike session, we have the privilege of meeting Khalid Baghdadi, a dynamic leader with a wealth of experience in marketing, business transformation, and self-improvement. Let's dive into Khalid's journey and discover the person behind the title.

Early Life and Family Influence

Khalid Baghdadi was born in Riyadh and spent a significant part of his early life in Scotland, where his father was pursuing his master’s degree. Khalid’s father was a marketing graduate, a career path that Khalid followed, while his mother, a history PhD, played an important role in shaping his life and values. Khalid reflects, “My mother was always passionate about history and the Arabic language. She instilled in us the importance of education and the need to understand what you are learning, not just memorizing facts.”

Khalid’s early exposure to various aspects of life, moving from country to country, shaped his curiosity and drive. “We always moved and started fresh. It gave me the self-motivation to evolve and adapt.”

College Life and Early Career Challenges

After returning from Scotland, Khalid began his studies in Riyadh, where he decided to attend King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals. However, as with many young students, Khalid faced some early career challenges. Initially enrolling in electrical engineering, Khalid quickly realized that it wasn’t his true passion. He switched to marketing, a decision that would shape his future.

“I went through a challenging journey trying to figure out where I truly belonged,” Khalid says. He soon became the president of the Industrial Management Club at his university, using his platform to help others navigate the challenges of selecting a career path.

Career Milestones: From Unilever to Entrepreneurship

Khalid’s career journey began with a six-year tenure at Unilever, where he was involved in marketing campaigns that gained global recognition. One of his proudest moments was during the 1998 World Cup, where his team came up with a creative advertising solution for a product, despite the rising costs of advertising. “We created a short and impactful message that resulted in one of the most successful campaigns for the brand. It was a cheap yet effective solution, and it raised the product’s profile immensely.”

Following his success at Unilever, Khalid moved on to a role at STC (Saudi Telecom) during the emerging telecom industry boom. He was involved in managing the marketing department, where he learned how to handle complex campaigns in a rapidly changing market.

Eventually, Khalid faced a major decision in his career, whether to continue in marketing or take on a broader role in company management. This decision led him to key executive roles, where he successfully managed multiple companies. “The moment I became the CEO of Key Car Rental, it was a game-changer,” he reflects. "I moved from marketing to running a company with huge plans to take it to the next level.”

Passion for Cars: Turning a Hobby into a Career

Khalid’s passion for cars is something that has been with him since he was a child. He recalls, "At the age of three, I would visit the supermarket with my mom, but instead of shopping, I would just look at the cars." This passion has grown over time, shaping his career. “I've always been fascinated by the automobile industry, and it’s something I read about constantly. My room was always filled with car models.”

This love for cars has even influenced his business ventures, as Khalid decided to use his passion for automobiles in his entrepreneurial pursuits. "I want to create something affordable and valuable for people," he says. "I believe in offering a product that’s accessible, good quality, and easy to obtain."

Leadership Lessons: Building a Culture of Engagement

As a leader, Khalid believes in the power of curiosity and continuous learning. “Curiosity has always been a big thing in my life,” he shares. “I want to understand everything around me and learn how things work.” His experiences in different industries taught him the importance of starting from the ground up. “When you join a new company or start a new business, you must start from scratch. You cannot make informed decisions unless you understand every job in the company."

Khalid’s leadership style emphasizes empathy and engagement. “A leader's role is to engage their team and make them feel like they are the backbone of the company. I’ve always told my teams, ‘I am here to make your life easier,’ and it works because they own their work and take pride in it,” he explains.

The Power of Positive Thinking

One of Khalid’s core principles is the importance of maintaining a positive attitude. “I always approach life with a smile. Life will happen anyway, so why complicate it?” he reflects. Khalid believes that positive thinking is key to overcoming challenges and staying focused on the goal. “When you are smiling and maintaining a positive attitude, you are immune to challenges. I always face my struggles with a smile,” he adds.

This positive mindset has helped Khalid overcome many difficult situations, both professionally and personally. “Life is full of ups and downs. Smiling is my way of coping with the tough times,” he says.

Innovation and AI: The Future of Business

As someone who is always looking for ways to innovate, Khalid is particularly interested in the potential of artificial intelligence (AI). “I see AI as a game-changer for any business,” he says. “If businesses can leverage AI and data mining, they will have a significant edge in the market. I am working on using AI in the car rental business and other ventures, and it’s something I believe will shape the future of business.”

Khalid’s interest in AI is not just limited to business; he sees it as a tool that can revolutionize industries, improve efficiency, and drive success.

Leadership and Coaching: Empowering Others

Khalid has also made a mark in coaching and mentoring. “I’ve been coaching people at all levels, from high school students to CEOs, helping them develop their leadership skills and create their personal roadmaps for success,” he shares. His approach to coaching focuses on engaging people and helping them realize their potential. “I enjoy seeing others grow and achieve their goals. When I coach someone, I know that I’m impacting their future, and that’s a reward in itself.”
