From a Shy Child to a Leader Who Inspires Smiles: The Journey of Abdullah Al-Sabban
Who is Abdullah? A Quiet Leader Who Chooses Influence
Abdullah Al-Sabban does not define himself as just a “manager” or “executive.” He is a leader, coach, and human being who believes in the power of listening before speaking. With over 20 years of experience in both global and local companies, from laboratories to supply chains to leading teams of tens of thousands, his mission remains the same: empowering people and creating meaningful impact.
When Did Leadership Begin? Roots in an Academic Home
Abdullah grew up in Jeddah in a household rooted in knowledge and discipline. Both his father and mother were university professors who instilled in him a love for structure, commitment, and serving others. Despite his shyness, teachers often chose him to lead school teams and associations. “People saw something in me that I couldn’t see in myself,” he recalls. That’s where the seed of leadership was planted.
A Career That Moved Beyond Laboratories
Abdullah graduated in Microbiology from King Abdulaziz University and joined a GlaxoSmithKline manufacturing facility. He transitioned across roles in laboratories, quality assurance, and supply chains until he became plant manager, and later worked on global strategic teams alongside the CEO in London. Each transition became a new opportunity to learn, grow, and sharpen his leadership skills.
The Balance Method: Work Until Five, Reflect After
For Abdullah, success without balance drains the soul. He created a personal rule: his workday ends at 5 p.m., and weekends are dedicated to family and self-care. Even during vacations, he disconnects from emails and phones to give himself time to reflect. This practice helped him discover what he wanted to change in himself and sustained his energy with positivity.
A Turning Point: Lessons from a Hijacked Plane
One of the most powerful moments of his life came outside the workplace. Abdullah was on a flight to London that was hijacked after the Gulf War. “Your whole life flashes before your eyes,” he recalls. That experience made him deeply appreciate life and relationships, and confirmed that fear should never stop a person from embracing new experiences.
A Passion for Coaching and Mentorship
Though his career was defined by executive roles, Abdullah discovered his true passion in coaching and mentorship. He opened a small office and began practicing coaching alongside his professional work. “Coaching is a tool that helps people see their lives with clarity and think differently,” he explains. Today, he holds a senior leadership role in a major Saudi company and runs initiatives such as the “Smile Project”, which has left a positive mark on employees, customers, and the wider community.
Leadership Lessons He Shares
Abdullah believes leadership is not about titles, it’s about impact. He advises young leaders to give themselves time to think, live lives aligned with their passions, and be truly ready for change. His leadership philosophy is built on three values: balance, listening, and sincerity.
What’s Next? Leading with Humility and Impact
The journey of Abdullah Al-Sabban is the story of a quiet leader who creates change silently while spreading smiles wherever he goes. The central lesson is simple: when you live your values and invest in people, your path to influence becomes wider and deeper.
