Nasser Al-Qawas: A Leader Shaped by Experience and Humility

In this episode of 2030 Leaders Mic, we had the privilege of speaking with Nasser Al-Qawas, a remarkable leader whose journey reflects the power of humility, hard work, and adaptability. Nasser's story is one of personal growth, career evolution, and a commitment to excellence.

A Family-Oriented Foundation

Nasser Al-Qawas was born in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, into a close-knit family. His parents, along with his three sisters, provided the foundation for his values and aspirations. Nasser is married to Rania Al-Baz, and together they have six children, five daughters and a son, whom he is proud of and deeply loves.

From an early age, Nasser showed a passion for sports, particularly swimming. He recalls being highly involved in swimming during his school years, eventually becoming a competitive swimmer. Although he no longer swims professionally, Nasser's love for the sport remains strong, and he continues to enjoy it recreationally.

The Journey into Law

Nasser's academic journey took him to King Abdulaziz University, where he pursued a law degree. After completing his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in law, Nasser embarked on his professional career with the same determination that defined his educational path.

In the early days of his career, Nasser worked at a security services company while still in university. However, he soon found himself drawn to the legal profession. His transition into law happened when he was working on a project related to security services for a law firm, and after expressing interest, he was offered a position at a prestigious international law firm in Saudi Arabia. This was a pivotal moment in Nasser's life, as he was able to start his professional career at a reputable firm that offered significant opportunities for growth.

Challenges and Learning

Nasser's first role at the law firm was a steep learning curve. He was eager to learn and take on tasks beyond his official duties, from administrative work to handling government relations. His dedication and humility helped him earn the respect of his colleagues, even those with far more experience.

Nasser credits his English proficiency as a key factor in his success, allowing him to navigate complex legal matters with greater ease. Despite the early challenges, he continued to push himself to learn, often going above and beyond the expectations of his role.

A Transformative Move to Banking

After six years in the legal field, Nasser's career took another turn when he joined the National Commercial Bank (NCB) in 1997. At the time, NCB was transforming, transitioning from a family-run business to a state-owned bank. Nasser was the first Saudi national to join the legal department, which at the time was primarily staffed by foreign nationals.

Nasser recalls the initial challenges of integrating into a team where he was much younger and less experienced than his colleagues. However, his humility, work ethic, and commitment to learning allowed him to build strong relationships with his colleagues and excel in his role. His time at NCB was instrumental in shaping his leadership skills and developing his understanding of corporate governance, which would later become one of his areas of expertise.

Rising Through the Ranks

Nasser's legal expertise and leadership abilities quickly became apparent, and he soon took on more senior roles within the bank. He became the Head of the Legal Department, where he oversaw critical legal matters related to the bank's operations. This role included managing legal risks, overseeing compliance efforts, and working closely with senior executives to navigate complex regulatory environments.

His career continued to progress, and by 2011, Nasser was promoted to Chief Compliance Officer for the entire bank. In this role, he was responsible for managing the bank's compliance with regulatory standards and ensuring that the bank met the highest standards of corporate governance.

Moving to Bupa Arabia and Shaping the Future

In 2016, after nearly two decades at NCB, Nasser made a bold decision to transition to Bupa Arabia, a leading health insurance company. At Bupa, Nasser took on the role of General Counsel, where he oversaw the company’s legal affairs and governance.

Nasser’s extensive experience in the regulated banking sector helped him successfully navigate the highly regulated insurance industry, where he played a key role in improving the company’s internal governance and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. He also led the legal and compliance teams, helping Bupa navigate challenges in the health insurance market.

Nasser's time at Bupa Arabia was marked by significant contributions to the company’s growth and success, and his leadership helped shape the company into one of the most trusted names in the insurance sector.

A New Chapter with Saudi Airlines

In early 2023, Nasser made another significant career move when he joined Saudi Airlines as Head of Legal Affairs. His role involves overseeing the legal department and handling legal matters for the entire airline group, including compliance, regulations, and internal governance.

Nasser reflects on how each phase of his career has been marked by his desire to learn and adapt, which has helped him navigate different sectors successfully. Whether in banking, insurance, or aviation, Nasser has applied his legal expertise and leadership abilities to drive success and create meaningful change.

Leadership Lessons and Personal Growth

Throughout his career, Nasser has been deeply influenced by the principles of humility and adaptability. He believes that leadership is not about being the loudest voice in the room, but about listening, learning, and empowering others to succeed. Nasser’s story reflects the idea that leadership is about empathy, vision, and the willingness to adapt to new challenges.

One key lesson Nasser shares is the importance of humility in leadership. He recalls an incident early in his career when he was publicly reprimanded by his boss, a situation that initially embarrassed him. However, this experience taught him the importance of grace in leadership—how to handle difficult situations with dignity and respect for others.

He also credits his ability to adapt quickly to new environments, whether in law, banking, insurance, or aviation, as one of his key strengths. Nasser’s adaptability allows him to lead effectively across various industries, making him a dynamic and resilient leader.

A Legacy of Giving Back

Outside of his professional accomplishments, Nasser is also passionate about giving back to his community. He mentors young professionals, helping them navigate the complexities of the corporate world and the legal field. He is also deeply committed to his family and sees his role as a husband and father as central to his life.

In his personal time, Nasser continues to pursue his love for swimming, sharing his passion for the sport with others by teaching young children to swim. He also emphasizes the importance of balance between work and family life, and credits his success to his support system, his family, colleagues, and mentors.

Nasser’s journey is a testament to the power of continuous learning, adaptability, and humility. His story serves as an inspiration for leaders across industries, showing that with dedication, passion, and a commitment to personal growth, anything is possible.
