From Coffee Assistant to Corporate Leader: The Transformative Journey of Tariq Khoshhal
A Childhood of Observation and Responsibility
Growing up in Madinah as the youngest of five siblings, Tareq Khushhal learned early to observe before acting. He spent hours with his mother, listening to family stories and forming his own judgments of people’s choices. But his mother would always turn the mirror back on him: “What did you do?” she asked whenever he came to complain about his siblings. This simple question taught him accountability, a lesson he would carry into leadership decades later.
Lessons from the Dojo: Mastery is Just the Beginning
Tareq was a sports enthusiast, dabbling in basketball, volleyball, table tennis, and multiple martial arts. When he earned his black belt in karate, his coach told him, “These were just your basics — now we begin teaching you the real katas.” That moment left a lasting mark. Years later, when he moved into executive leadership, he realized that every promotion was like that black belt: not the finish line but the starting point for deeper learning.
From Coffee Maker to Accountant
While still in high school, Tareq began working in his father’s business. His first “promotion” was as assistant to the coffee maker because he didn’t yet know how to brew tea. But he persisted, moving from coffee making to sales, collections, and finally accounting. It was his first exposure to finance and discipline, teaching him that respect is earned through effort, not handed out with titles.
Breaking Into the Corporate World
Tareq pursued accounting at university and later earned an MBA in Finance from Canada. His first professional role was at SEDCO, working alongside seasoned veterans decades older. He sharpened his skill in evaluating people, a childhood habit turned professional advantage, and later held key positions at Gulf International Bank, Sura Capital, and AlKhabeer Capital before returning to SEDCO.
Turning Around a Struggling Company
In 2017, Tareq was asked to temporarily lead Auto World, a company facing severe operational and HR challenges. What started as a two-month acting CEO assignment became a five-year transformation journey. Managing 400+ employees across six cities, many without email or English proficiency, forced him to simplify ideas, listen more deeply, and rebuild the culture from the ground up. Under his leadership, Auto World went from losses to profitability and rose to fourth place nationally in workplace environment rankings before being acquired.
From Judgment to Love: A Leadership Shift
A pivotal moment in Tareq’s leadership came from a coaching conversation. When asked, “What’s the opposite of love?” he said, “hate.” His coach replied, “No, it’s judgment.” That insight shifted Tareq’s approach from judging to empathizing with his people. He also refined his listening, moving from surface-level hearing to sensing tone, emotion, and unspoken meaning. This deeper connection became the foundation of his success at Auto World.
Learning to Drive Change
Tareq credits his success in change management to books like Switch and programs such as Misk and Harvard executive education. He learned that if 50% of employees don’t understand the strategy, it will fail. His focus became translating corporate goals into “what’s in it for me” for every team member, transforming a shared mission instead of a top-down directive.
The Power of Relationships and Legacy
Throughout his journey, Tareq built strong networks with local and international leaders, peers, and mentors. He names his father, mother, and wife as his greatest influences, the first for business acumen, the second for accountability and empathy, and the third for keeping the family strong during his most demanding years.
For Tareq Khushhal, leadership is not about titles but about balance, accountability, and growth. It’s about moving from judgment to love, from mastering basics to learning anew, and from individual success to building organizations that thrive beyond your tenure. His story shows that humility, empathy, and persistence can turn a coffee assistant into a transformative corporate leader.
